How to Open a Flower Shop

Instructions

1. Decide first if you are going to purchase a existing flower shop business, a franchise or open up a new flower shop. All three have their pros and cons, but naturally, one of these three paths will be tailor-made for you.

2. Develop a business plan. Research how much of a need there is for a flower shop by assessing the number of potential customers. Find out how much competition you will have for those customers.

3. Pick a location. Determine how much work space you will need along with retail space. Allow space for storage.

4. Determine the weekly and daily floral supplies you will need to get set up. List these and the volume needed. Include the purchase of a delivery truck or van. Don't forget employees and insurance. A computer will also be useful along with a telephone and fax machine. Basic office supplies will include rubber stamps, labels, pens and billing supplies.

5. Locate your local growers and wholesalers that you can buy from to stock your shop. Make arrangements to speak with them directly if possible; you may be able to negotiate a lower rate by buying in bulk.

6. Prepare a price sheet for all of your arrangements. Consider wire services to allow you to attract customers from other cities.

7. Once you have your marketing plan perfect, get that bank loan and start setting up shop. It may sound like a daunting task now, but if you take each step slowly and cautiously, opening a flower shop is easily attainable.
